This book analyzes and assesses theories of democracy emanating
from studies in a variety of disciplines, and proposes answers to a
wide range of questions in moral and political philosophy,
philosophy of law and democratic theory. Taken together, these

Taken together, the essays in this volume offer a particular, yet
comprehensive, view of the economic history of Western Europe since
the Renaissance. The focus is wide and the level of treatment deep.
Between 1550 and 1940, Professor Parker contends, the development
of European capitalism was, in a sense, all of a piece. He
separates the development into three periods and processes -
'Malthusian', 'Smithian', and 'Schumpeterian'. Each period was
governed by a characteristic dynamic that produced productivity
growth, in the presence of other favourable elements, and
influenced also the evolution of the forms of industrial and
economic life. A certain internal logic is claimed for this
progression, which in the nineteenth century extended this system
and technology efficiently over much of the globe. In the
concluding essay, Professor Parker examines the break-up of the
capitalist synthesis and speculates on its transmutation into other
forms. Essays and reviews previously available in widely scattered
sources are brought together here for the first time and arranged
and amplified to develop the central theses.
A definitive ethnological study of the Iroquois' subsistence,
religious traditions, laws, and customs.
Originally written in 1976 for his "Paris-New York" exhibition,
"Reflection on a Past Life" is painter William N. Copley's
(1919-1996) humorous and insightful account of his many bizarre
encounters with key Surrealists, such as Man Ray, Max Ernst, Marcel
Duchamp and Rene Magritte. After inheriting a fortune as a young
man, Copley (often known as "CPLY"), used his family wealth to open
The Copley Galleries in Beverly Hills shortly after World War II,
where he exhibited works by major Surrealist artists. Although the
gallery proved to be a financial flop, closing after its first
year, Copley secured a place in the annals of art history by
bringing Surrealism to Hollywood, as well as with his own painting.
This memoir provides a revealing and intimate look at the work and
thought processes of Copley's heroes from the frank, engaging
perspective of a younger colleague.
Steadily rising affluence and greater freedom have brought us more
choices, more opportunities, and richer lifestyles than ever
before.
However, here is the 'paradox of progress' - that our
expectations are greater than ever, that there is never enough
time, and that the great majority of us are suffering from 'choice
overload'. Life often feels too hectic, too pressured - too
complicated.
Would we really want to turn back the clock to simpler times?
Absolutely not - today's consumers are richer, healthier, safer and
have more freedom than any before them. But to reap the benefitsof
progress, consumers need help to cope with the complexities they
face. This is the key problem in the lives of the affluent
majority, and a prime opportunity for business in the 21st
century.
In a book as useful to consumers as it is to business
strategists, Willmott and Nelson present in-depth analysis of the
complexities of modern consumers' lives, and provide innovative and
practical responses for business and marketing strategy.
